Use Blog in the Classroom

After I gained knowledge about blogs, I found it as an amazing tool to use to post homework assignments, school/ class events, or any class-related information. That would leave no excuse for students not to do their homework if they are absent from school. In addition, it is a useful tool to involve parents in their children’s lives because high elementary students and so forth do not usually involve their parents in their school lives or what they learning about in their classes. Moreover, blogging enhances communication between teachers/students or among students. Blogging helps the teachers learn how their students think because some students are too shy to share their ideas in front of their classmates. If I had a permanent teaching job, I would use blog to provide my students with links to appropriate sites to use for research projects, to post prompts for writing, and discuss or express their opinions on any topic that was covered in the class.

I agree that blogging is a fantastic tool to add to our toolbox in communicating with parents and students alike. In the district that I work many of our families do not connect to the internet for economic or philosophical reasons making it tough for this communcation to a work. It is a great benefit for those who do have access and check regularly!!

  2. Using a blog to post homework assignments, upcoming events and educational resources is definitely a great way to utilize this resource. I currently have a class website through Scholastic.com. I use my website as a place to post each week's spelling/vocabulary words. If a student loses or forgets their lists, they (and their parents) still have access to them at home. I also include several links to school related sites. I plan to convert my class homepage into a blog where students/families can comment back.

  3. Howayda,
You have some great ideas! Some things to think about when you implement them: Will blogging be a grade? If so, how would you evaluate it? What do you do if some students do not have access to the internet like Melissa mentioned in her response? At my school, we have computers in the library. When I put something online I require the students to access, I write passes to use the library and give then several days to complete the assignment.

  4. Hi Shannon,
Thank you for your comment! I will never use blogging for evaluation because I know many students do not have computers at home or have access to the internt. However, most of the students use the public library to use the computer, or they use the school computer lab.

  5. I like the idea of using a blog as a place to post class or homework assignment information. It seems like an easy way for educators to provide this information without having to create a webpage.

  6. Howayda,
I agree, this can be a great tool for the classroom. So far, I'm using this to explain what topics we are covering in my science classroom.
